Inductive Bible Study Basics for Logos: Cross-Referencing & Historical Background
Walking Through Inductive Bible Study with Logos
Dr. John Fallahee opens the webinar by emphasizing two foundational resources for cross-referencing and historical context: The New Treasure of Scripture Knowledge, which offers over 500,000 verse-by-verse cross-references, and the IVP Background Commentary along with its Old Testament counterpart. These tools help avoid anachronistic assumptions by grounding interpretation in the original audience's understanding, such as recognizing that Moses' recipients of the Pentateuch had no New Testament context.
In the first practical demonstration using Romans 8:28–30, the "Golden Chain" passage, Dr. Fallahee shows how footnotes with curated cross-references can be streamlined through the "Power Lookup" tool. Accessed via the main menu grid icon and typing "power," this tool lets users select specific footnote text (e.g., "A") and link it to a Bible for filtered results. He also introduces the "Explorer" tool under "Tools" > "Explore" > "Passage," which displays cross-references in a collapsible format. To prevent dynamic updates while navigating, he duplicates a Bible, sends hyperlinks to the duplicate, and arranges both side-by-side, keeping one fixed while the other jumps to references.
Dr. Fallahee then walks through the "Passage Guide," accessed by typing "passage" in the main menu. He recommends collapsing all sections initially to manage information overload. Key features include "Parallel Passages" for aggregating Gospel accounts (e.g., the feeding of the 5,000) and "Cross References" listing relevant verses in the user's library. Creating a "Passage List" via Documents > New > Passage List allows adding verses by typing references (e.g., "Jeremiah 12.4") or pasting from clipboard. Drag-and-drop functionality organizes cross-references, and right-click options add headings for structure.
In the intermediate section on custom guides, he instructs users to download the "webinar cross-referencing" template via Docs > Public, then add it to their guides. Setting "05 Cross-Referencing" as the sole setting in Collections > Settings consolidates cross-references, parallel passages, and concordance data. This is especially useful for passages like Matthew 27, which reveals extensive Old Testament connections. He also showcases premium collections like the *New American Salem Exhaustive Concordance* for targeted searches on topics such as "providence" or "predestination."
Dr. Fallahee stresses anchoring interpretations in the text’s original canon and audience to avoid personal biases. Practical tips include using thematic outlines to identify related ideas and custom guides for organization, while avoiding overly broad searches like "Genesis" in favor of specific verses. This approach ensures contextually grounded inductive study that honors God by letting Scripture interpret Scripture.
